Philips began as Philips & Co., founded in 1891 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, by Gerard Philips and his father Frederik, according to the history page of Koninklijke Philips N.V. Philips-branded coffee machines, however, are no longer a Royal Philips business: the Domestic Appliances division became independent in September 2021, was disentangled from the group and sold to the investment firm Hillhouse Capital, and on 17 February 2023 changed its name to Versuni. The official announcement made that day states that, as a licensee of Royal Philips, the company continues to use the Philips brand on its products, alongside Saeco, Gaggia and Philips Walita.
Versuni is headquartered in Amsterdam, states that it is active in more than 100 countries with over 900 patents, and markets a portfolio that includes Philips, Philips Baristina, Saeco, Gaggia, Senseo, L'OR Barista, Preethi and Philips Walita. Its Brands page specifies that Philips, Saeco, Gaggia and Walita are registered trademarks of Koninklijke Philips N.V., while Versuni is a trademark of Versuni Holding B.V.: the name on the machine and the company that designs and sells it are two separate entities.
In coffee, the official pages consulted mention fully automatic espresso machines with the LatteGo milk system and the Philips Baristina line, presented as a bean-to-cup espresso machine. In March 2026 Versuni introduced the Philips Café Aromis in North America, described as the most advanced addition to its fully automatic lineup, with the LatteGo Pro milk system and a 13.5 g brewing chamber; the same release marks 2026 as the year Philips celebrates 70 years of coffee heritage. Philips's home appliances site is now served from the home-appliances.philips domain.
