Is Dawairi an heirloom variety?
Yes: it is a native, unselected variety. Heirlooms do not come from a breeding programme and their classification often remains approximate.
How it grows
In Yemen, plant names are vernacular. Montagnon's study (Agronomy, 2022) surveyed the names on 148 farms across the main coffee areas and genotyped 88 trees whose name had been confirmed by the growers: the names follow a clear geographical pattern but show no significant association with genetics. There are three genetic groups — SL34-derived, Bourbon/Typica-derived, and the "New-Yemen" group, which resembles no variety grown anywhere else.
