Chemex Corporation makes the borosilicate glass pour-over coffeemaker that carries its name, designed and patented in 1941 by chemist and inventor Peter Schlumbohm, who held over 300 patents across his career. Applying his chemistry background to coffee extraction, Schlumbohm also developed the Bonded paper filter that pairs with the coffeemaker, and drew on Bauhaus design and the non-porous labware he used in his experiments for the carafe's hourglass shape.

The company's official page states that Chemex Corporation has been family owned and operated for over 40 years, today led by a brother and sister who grew up on the factory floor; the founding year of the corporate entity itself, as distinct from the product's patent date, is not disclosed by the manufacturer. Manufacturing remains entirely in Franklin, Massachusetts, where every coffeemaker is inspected, polished and hand-tied, and where filters are cut in house from compostable, US-sourced material.

Alongside its classic coffeemakers, the company sells an official spare-parts catalogue online - wood collars, rawhide ties, gaskets and components for the electric Ottomatic model - letting owners repair existing units rather than replace them.
