Grind: Medium for pre-ground, medium-fine if you grind fresh — in that case the source drops the steep to 30 seconds.

Served in: Single mug

It does not scale: the chamber is what it is. For a second cup you repeat the brew, which takes under two minutes.

Ingredients

  • 17 g Ground coffee — 16–18 g according to the source
  • Water at 85 °C — Up to the 4 mark on the chamber

Method

  1. Fit the filter

Put the paper filter in the cap and twist the cap onto the chamber.

  2. Dose and level

Pour the coffee into the chamber and level it with a gentle shake, without tamping.

  3. Pour and stir

Water up to the 4 mark, then stir gently for about 3 seconds.

  4. Seal and wait

Insert the plunger half an inch and pull up slightly to create a vacuum. Wait 60 seconds.

  5. Press until it hisses

Press with gentle constant pressure, until you hear the hissing begin and end.

Common mistakes

  • It drips before you press → insert the plunger half an inch and pull up slightly: the vacuum stops the flow.
  • Hard to push → grind too fine, or too much force. You press gently, not hard.
  • Stop at the hiss → when the hissing begins and ends, the last of the brew has passed. Going further only pushes air.
  • Do not tamp the grounds in the chamber: level them with a shake, not with a tamper.

The AeroPress is a syringe: the coffee steeps for a minute and is then pushed through a paper filter by the pressure of your hand. It is not espresso — the pressure is a fraction of 9 bar — but it is not pure filter either, and it is that hybrid which gives it its body.

It is the only device in this section designed to be carried around: light, plastic, and washed in ten seconds by ejecting the coffee puck. That is why it has the following it has.
