The Alex PID is a heat-exchanger machine with the café E61 group: a single boiler makes the steam and heats the brew water, and it works continuously without the steam fading while in use. The pump is rotary and runs either from the tank or from the mains. The body is double-walled stainless steel, and the boiler is insulated to use less energy.
A PID holds the temperature within a degree and a timer counts the seconds of each shot; two gauges show boiler and pump pressure. There is room for a large cup, up to 10.5 cm tall. The box already holds two portafilters, a 58 mm tamper, a blind basket for cleaning the group, a brush, a cloth and a cover for the machine.
It is for someone who wants a small café machine, solid and ready for long sessions, with the full portafilter ritual. The 2.3-litre tank needs frequent refilling under heavy use: where possible, plumbing it in is worthwhile. Like every E61 group, it needs switching on in good time.
