Sage Barista Express

The Barista Express is Sage's mid-range semi-automatic with a built-in grinder: it pairs a conical burr grinder unit with a 250g bean hopper and 16 grind settings with a professional-style 54mm portafilter loaded with an 18g dose, according to the quick guide and the product page. Heating is handled by a thermocoil system with PID temperature control, which the manufacturer states delivers water at exactly 93°C for balanced extraction: for this reason this page classifies it among the coil-heated (thermocoil) semi-automatics, unlike the Bambino Plus, whose ThermoJet is never explicitly called a thermocoil.
Extraction follows a low pressure pre-infusion followed by 9 bar, generated by a 15 bar Italian pump; an espresso pressure gauge is listed among the front-panel components. Unlike the Bambino Plus, the steam wand here is not automatic: the manufacturer describes it as manual milk texturing, to be handled "like a barista". The 54mm portafilter ships with single wall filter baskets, for freshly roasted whole beans, and dual wall baskets, for pre-ground or older coffee.
The quick guide states a power draw of 1560-1850W on a 220-240V, 50Hz supply, with no single figure for the European unit. Neither the machine's weight nor the water tank capacity in litres is stated on the product page or in the quick guide reviewed.

Pros and cons
In favour
- Thermocoil heating system with PID control: declared fixed temperature of 93°C, not just a generic range.
- Espresso pressure gauge built into the front panel, to read extraction pressure in real time.
- Professional-style 54mm portafilter with an 18g dose, supplied with both single and dual wall filter baskets.
- Integrated conical burr grinder with a 250g hopper, so a separate grinder is not needed. source
Worth knowing
- The steam wand is manual, not automatic like on the Bambino Plus: it takes practice to get consistent microfoam.
- Power draw is declared only as a range (1560-1850W, 220-240V): there is no single nameplate figure. source
- Machine weight and water tank capacity are not stated in the documentation reviewed. source
Accessories that fit this machine
The group diameter has no tolerance: only what is declared for 54 mm will fit.
