The Mechanika Max II is ECM's newest heat-exchanger machine: a single boiler makes the steam and heats the brew water, with a PID that lets you choose the temperature between 90 and 95 °C. Pre-infusion is adjustable and has two modes: active, for use with the tank, and passive, for when the machine is plumbed in.
Steam, hot water and brewing are worked with tilt levers. The three-litre tank and the mains connection switch over without tools, and the display warns when water is running low. Start-up can be scheduled, and energy-saving mode turns off heating and screen after an idle time you choose. The box holds two portafilters, baskets, a blind basket, a tamper, a group brush, a water filter and the hose for plumbing in.
The display reminds you when to clean the group, every 90 to 140 coffees, and when to change the water filter; the boiler water should be renewed every one or two weeks even with frequent use. Flow control is sold separately. It is for someone who wants a heat exchanger with temperature in hand and a few conveniences, without moving up to a dual boiler.
