Data from official source

The Drive is the dual boiler with which Profitec brings a bench-top setup into a home kitchen. The two boilers are separate and made of stainless steel — 0.75 l for coffee, 2.0 l for steam and hot water — and each has its own PID: brew temperature is set independently of steam, and the steam boiler can be switched off entirely when only espresso is on the menu.

What sets it apart from a classic dual boiler is the flow control valve built into the machine: it regulates water flow to the group and can be moved during extraction, which turns the flow profile into a parameter you govern rather than a consequence of the plumbing. Preinfusion is available both active and passive, and the OLED display shows shot time as it runs.

On water it does not force a choice: a 2.8 l tank or a fixed connection, switchable. The pump is rotary, both gauges are in plain sight, fast heat-up is programmable along with on and off times. What this completeness costs is physical: 31 kg and 59 cm of depth with the portafilter fitted, worth working out before the countertop.

Pros and cons

In favour

  • Independent PIDs on both boilers: coffee and steam temperatures are set separately.
  • Flow control built in as standard: the flow profile can be changed during extraction, with no third-party kit.
  • 2.8 l tank or mains water connection, switchable: you don't have to decide on the plumbing at the time of purchase.
  • The steam boiler switches off separately: if you only drink espresso, you don't have to keep it hot. source

Worth knowing

  • 31 kg and 48.5 cm deep (59 with the portafilter): it needs a dedicated worktop and won't be moved for cleaning. source
  • Draws 1600 W: on a 3 kW domestic supply there is little headroom for other appliances running at the same time. source
  • The manufacturer declares neither brew pressure, heat-up time nor steam wand type: six rows of the table remain empty. source
